Gas Coalescing Filter Cartridges

Both the Nowata Filtration PGR Gas Coalescing Filter Cartridge and the VGR Gas Coalescing Filter Cartridge are compressed air coalescer and particulate removal filters. They will remove over 99.99% of oil and water aerosols from air and gas streams.

Flow is from the inside to the outside of the cartridges. Oil, water and other liquid aerosols pass through the filter media where their reduced velocities allow them to "wet" the filter fibers thus forming larger droplets. These large droplets continue moving through the media. The droplets collect on the outer cartridge and drain, by gravity, to the bottom of the filter cartridge housing. The housing should have an extended sump for the collection of coalesced liquids.

Although the cartridges will remove particulate, it is recommended that a particle filter be installed upstream of the coalescing filter, operating in the standard outside to in flow configuration. This will significantly extend the life and improve the removal efficiency of the PGR or VGR cartridge.

compressed air coalescer and particulate removal filters

Here's How It Works:

1. Compressed air or gas enters the hollow inner core of the cartridge and flows outward through the extended area filter media and perforated metal casing.

2. Airborne droplets are coalesced by the filter media and subsequently concentrated on the outer surface.

3. Gravity forces the coalesced liquid to the bottom of the filter housing where it can be drained easily.

4. The air or gas stream continues on virtually free of all oil and particulates.

NOTE: The filter must be installed in the housing in a reverse flow position.  This procedure reverses the gas flow direction
in the filter housing.

CONSTRUCTION
The PGR cartridge has Stainless Steel shell and support components. The Stainless Steel outside wrapper supports the outside of the pleats since the flow and differential pressure are from the inside to the outside. The PGR cartridge uses the PG 0.45 media which in gas service will remove 0.3 micron particles. It has Buna flat end gaskets in a Double Open End style. Internally, it is composed of multilayer micro fiberglass with acrylic binder and polypropylene support layers.

The VGR cartridge, outside and internal support core and end caps are made of carbon steel with Viton flat end gaskets in a Double Open End style. Filter media is multi-layers of micro fiber glass (like fiberglass insulation) with phenolic resin binder, rolled into a 1/2" thick cylinder. Immediately outside of the fiber glass media is a perforated high density plastic support core covered with a thin polypropylene sheet. The outer poly sheet protects the glass fiber media and enhances the drainage down the outside of the cartridge. A definitive micron rating is not assigned to the VGR cartridge, but the particle removal capacity is around 0.5 micron. Dirt holding capacity will be less than the pleated PGR cartridge.

Both cartridges are 2-5/8" Outside Diameter x 1-1/16" Inside Diameter x 10" Long. (6.67 cm OD x 2.7 cm ID x 25.4 cm Long).  30 inch long cartridges are also available.

APPLICATIONS
Both the PGR and the VGR can be used as a final liquid removal stage in fuel gas and instrument gas/air applications. Either cartridge can be used for water removal from air or natural gas. They can also be used as a pre-filter for compressed air and gas dryers or a final filter for air operated instruments, paint spray equipment and other pneumatic devices requiring oil and liquid free compressed natural gas or air.

The PGR should be used where fine solid particle removal is specified or where the customer expects a reasonably small amount of dirt, as well as liquid. The PGR should also be used for gas or liquid applications that are considered corrosive because of its stainless steel support components.

Use the VGR cartridge for oil coalescing applications. The VGR is especially suited for coalescing compressor oil from natural gas streams.
